Horsell Electrics wins award from BAE Systems Maritime

Horsell Electrics are proud to announce it has received the Bronze Award in the BAE Chairman’s Awards 2012 in the category of ‘Supporting Our Total Performance Culture’ for its involvement in the project ‘White Light Goes Green’.

BAE Systems’ prestigious ‘Chairman’s Awards’ were established in 1996 and annually recognise employees, partners, and customers for outstanding effort and achievement. The program honours innovative ideas, actions, and behaviour that further the company’s values while delivering benchmark performance.

The category ‘Supporting Our Total Performance Culture’ rewards the efforts of employees & partners who best represent the company’s commitment to maintaining a culture that promotes positive values in every aspect of its business. Nominations reflect engagement with and promotion of BAE Systems’ culture of Total Performance.

Horsell Electrics assisted the BAE project team in designing a lighter, more robust, portable and energy efficient replacement luminaire for their temporary 110v fluorescent site lighting. The lighting is used during the fabrication of ships for task lighting by welders, painters and electricians etc.

The solution consisted of an IP65 fully polycarbonate non-corrosive luminaire, with the latest energy saving multi-voltage T8 LED Tubes which also reduce Mercury heavy metal usage, a LED emergency lighting option and protected high strength Neodymium magnets to attach to the ship superstructure for ease of installation and movability while not damaging painted surfaces.

This design offered the benefits of a 50% weight saving, a luminaire more robust than the ABS bodied version they were currently using, a reduction in potential accidents as the LED tubes are durable unlike the glass fluorescent tubes which would easily shatter and savings of 70% on energy consumption, 70% on carbon and 70% on CO² making it a truly GREEN solution.

The  European Society for Quality Research  has selected us for an award for Best Practice. The winning companies are selected by ESQR's Selection Committee following the ESQR Quality Performance Model criteria: Customer Satisfaction, Training, Planning and Continuous Quality Improvement Techniques. Prior to selecting the awardees, the Selection Committee researches public information sources, publications, advertising campaigns, universities, chambers of commerce, trade fairs and exhibitions as well as carrying out internet polls. Companies and people are asked, via internet polls, to name companies or organizations which products and services meet their expectations. On the basis of recommended companies, the selection is carried out. The voters can be customers, suppliers, collaborating companies or just sympathizers. A special attention is paid to the quality endorsement policy of the selected organization and positive remarks. It is fantastic to win a second overseas award recognising the scope of our supply and reputation abroad. Drallim was invited to NATS’ Corporate and Technical Centre where they demonstrated an impressive understanding of our requirements. A suitable product already being developed that would meet the requirements of the existing and future installations of NATS was suggested by Drallim.

NATS placed an order and attended their headquarters in Sussex to carry out a Factory Acceptance Test. We were impressed by the set up and the product. The FAT enabled us to resolve a potential issue ahead of delivery and as a result not delay the delivery or subsequent programme of works.

"A NEW home designed to help adults with a debilitating condition is set to open later this year.

New Directions, which specialises in helping people suffering from Prader-Willi Syndrome, already has four specialist homes in Hastings and Rother and is opening the fifth, Bishop’s Gate, in Springfield Road, St Leonards in April.

The condition stems from a flaw in the part of the brain known as the hypothalamus, which determines hunger.

This means sufferers feel compelled to eat non-stop.

Chris Leppard, from St Leonards, had Prader-Willi Syndrome, and died in May 2007, aged 25.

His weight reached 40 stone at one point.

Mr Leppard hit the headlines in 2005 when he was sectioned under the Mental Heath Act but released after being assessed at a specialist eating disorder unit.

David Palmer, general manager of New Directions, said: “In a climate of uncertainty we have continued to experience a high level of enquiries for our services.

“After much discussion and thought the company has decided to expand.

“Prader-Willi Syndrome can have a devastating affect on people’s health and well-being if they are not supported. It’s primarily seen as an eating condition as sufferers have an overriding urge to eat that takes over.

“Some people who have come to our homes weighing 24 stone and are now 12 stone, leading healthy lifestyles.”

Mr Palmer’s nephew, Vincent, had the condition and died aged 20 in 1997.

Prader-Willi Syndrome is a rare genetic condition that occurs in one in 15,000 to 20,000 live births.

Bishop’s Gate will generate an additional 16 to 18 new jobs and provide eight spaces.

New Directions has links with the Prader-Willi Syndrome Association (UK) (PWSA), and regularly raises funds for the charity. The 2010 Hastings Carnival Queen, Tamara Gates, nominated PWSA as her nominated charity for her year in office.

Mr Palmer said: “A number of local work placement opportunities have been afforded to service users from local businesses, charities and a school. We would like to thank Drallim Industries, DVS media centre, Education Training Consortium Sussex, Scope and Little Common School.”

Named Finalist for IT in Manufacturing and SME Manufacturer of the Year Categories

Horsell Electrics Achieves 9001:2008 Quality Management Standard

This has been achieved just one year on from its acquisition in May2010

After our recent electrical site assessment HORSELL are now a fully accredited electrical company meeting the requirements of a competent person scheme as controlled by the National Association of Professional Inspectors and Testers  NAPIT

Shown below are the photographs taken at the Celebration and Assessment Day held at Brighton University on the 6th April 201, where 10 teams presented their projects. The Managing Director of Drallim, Dave Mooney was one of the team of assessors for the final day.
Drallim sponsored a team of 4 students studying their National Diploma in Mechanical Engineering from Sussex Coast College, Hastings, for an EES (Engineering Education Scheme) project. This is a nationally recognised scheme.
The project set by Drallim was to improve the retention method of bicycles on car mounted cycle carriers. The project lasted for six months, where David Elliott was our link engineer who mentoring the students together with their teacher, Keith Brister. An intensive 3-day residential just before Christmas at Sussex University was followed by weekly updates to check progress. They produced a prototype product, the "Rack-Adaptor", after discounting several other design concepts. The project comprised research, manufacture, and presentation, including manning their own stand and giving an individual 15 minute presentation to the team of assessors on the final day. A comprehensive report was produced, together with marketing material.

Drallim win Regional Finals of EEF Awards (EEF Press Release)

Drallim Industries, a St Leonards-on-Sea engineering business serving the aerospace, industrial and utilities markets, has been named among the country’s top companies in this year’s EEF Future Manufacturing Awards. 

The East Sussex-based company has won the EEF South East Region Business Growth Award in recognition of its success in growing its business even during the economic downturn. 

Drallim Industries has changed radically in recent years, with success being achieved as a result of strong product life-cycle management and an ability to be agile, change direction and develop new products. This strategic transformation has led to growth in profitability, even during the recessionary years, while creating new employment opportunities for local people.

Managing Director Dave Mooney said, “This award is fantastic recognition for all the staff at Drallim who have got behind our strategic plan and really delivered some amazing performances against very stiff challenges”

Phil Wilson and Martyn Turner have just completed the four week marathon, taking it in turns to represent the company during the month long Dream Marketing Tour. The pictures below show the giant trailer parked at a site of potential customers and the Drallim Aerospace display inside the tour van. 23 companies took part, and overall the tour was deemed a great success.

The citation from the Manufacturer reads "Once again the quality of the entries has been outstanding and our judges have worked very hard to ensure those shortlisted companies truly reflect world class manufacturing and best practice standards. Hopefully being shortlisted for The Manufacturer of the Year Awards is an achievement that everyone in your organisation will be proud to celebrate."

Each shortlisted company will have a 5-10 min time block to deliver a presentation to the judges on Tuesday 19th October at the RBS Williams F1 Conference Centre, Oxfordshire and show why they should be crowned as the winner of the ‘IT in Manufacturing’ Award 2010. John Routledge the Drallim IT manager will be making the presentation.
The winner of each category will be revealed at The Manufacture Gala dinner on Thursday 18th November at Chesford Grange, Kenilworth.

September brings another marketing opportunity with Drallim’s participation in the ‘Dream Marketing’ European Roadshow. Dream is an innovative concept insofar that it takes the company, its products and sales team out on the road and into the heart of its customer base.  Taking the show to the customer rather than waiting for the customer to come to the show. Companies scheduled to visit include Selex Galileo, BAe Systems, Lockheed Martin, Goodrich, Airbus, Rolls Royce, Thales, Qinetiq, Cobham Aviation, and Roke Manor Research. The tour finishes in France, where it will spend three days at the main Airbus assembly plant in Toulouse.

Bird Boxes installed at Drallim

A total of 7 nest boxes have been installed in the grounds of Drallim in St Leonard’s on Sea. The site backs onto Ponds Wood and provides a small, protected area within heavily used woodland.

Most urban nest box schemes set their boxes at over 8ft high, this is to avoid disturbance and interference from people rather than what’s best for the birds. Most woodland birds prefer to nest within 3-6ft of the ground and it is only within protected and controlled areas such as this that we can set the boxes at this desired height. We have used both open fronted boxes (to attract birds like the blackbird or the Robin) and ‘hole-fronted boxes,’ 28mm to target Blue Tits, Coal Tits etc, and 32mm for birds such as the Nuthatch, Great Tit, Marsh Tit and even the House Sparrow.

The monitoring of nest boxes provides very useful information to the British Trust for Ornithology and other conservation organisations; it allows us to check on brood size and fledging success, which in turn gives us an indication of the health of the surrounding habitats.

Hopefully the opportunity will present itself to mark the chicks with an individually numbered ring next year, which could over the years give a lot of information about the life expectancy and dispersal patterns of the birds from this site.

As part of the new Marketing Initiative the Drallim wheel has been introduced to give a simple yet effective overview of the product areas associated with Drallim Industries. In recent months the image has been seen regularly at exhibitions and on all marketing material. The three main areas are denoted by the Aerospace, Industrial and Utilities segments and subdivided into the activities of each.

Drallim exhibited at the Farnborough International Air Show this July. Drallim Aerospace pitched up in Hall 4, the largest exhibition hall in the show with a ‘ready to do business’ sales team and a formidable display of aerospace products, showcased by the 1500Kg Hawk Hook and Fast Roping system. Farnborough also provided the first opportunity to air the new Aerospace logo, which along with the new corporate folder and aerospace catalogue presented a bright, modern and dynamic image of the company to the aviation sector.

Sadly, after 60 years of manufacturing industrial light fittings in Brighton, Horsell Electrics Ltd ceased trading at the end of April with the loss of 12 jobs. Fortunately, following an introduction by South East Manufacturing Advisory Service (MAS South East) the business assets have been acquired and trading has restarted as “Horsell Electrics – A part of the Industrial Division of Drallim Industries Ltd”

Drallim is an award winning and long established Sussex Company; they are an Engineering, Equipment and Systems Manufacturer based in St Leonards on Sea. The company has seen steady growth through the recession and Managing Director Dave Mooney said:

“We are delighted to be able to step in and save the Horsell name within the Drallim Group. We are an employee centred company, committed to championing manufacture in the UK and Sussex in particular. Our ethos closely matches the family atmosphere at Horsell and we will continue their strong customer focus whilst bringing new investment and more jobs to Brighton in the future. Richard Ainsworth grandson of the founder of the company will continue working with us as a consultant and we will also continue to work closely with MAS South East and the University of Brighton - Product Development Centre who have both helped us grow our business.”

Initially they will be employing 10 people as well as using other group resources. In the coming months there are plans to relocate within the Brighton area to a modern factory unit and to invest in significant new plant and equipment. It totally encompasses ISO 9001, combining it with additional requirements designed specifically to address regulatory compliance and other aerospace sector specific issues.

National Grid Gas has awarded Drallim Industries the contract for the manufacture of 966 Slamshut Cabinets for their countrywide replacement program. The duration of the contract is seven years with a value of three million GBP.

The cabinets, of which there are eighteen variations, in conjunction with Slamshut Valves monitor the gas pressure and rapidly cut the flow of gas when the pressure in the system exceeds the set point and avoids overpressure conditions.

Iris Power is the world leader in partial discharge monitoring for HV rotating machines and generators.

We are excited that Greg Stone will be visiting the UK, 2nd – 4th March as the course instructor; Greg has over 30 years of experience in the application and testing of large motor and generator windings. The course will be of benefit to anyone involved in O&M, design and monitoring of HV machine stators. This is the full 3-day course and will prove to be very useful for power professionals.

Prior to joining Iris in 1990, Greg worked at Ontario Hydro for 15 years, where he specialised in testing the machine windings of the company’s 200 generators, and hundreds of motors in nuclear, fossil and hydro-generating plants. He has authored or co-authored approximately 100 technical papers on motor and generator windings and testing. He has also contributed to the writing of the “Handbook to Assess the Insulation Condition of Large Rotating Machines,” which is an EPRI publication. Greg’s most recent work is a book entitled, "Electrical Insulation for Rotating Machines-Design, Evaluation, Aging, Testing and Repair," which was co-written with Ian Culbert, Al Boulter (formerly of GE) and Hussein Dhirani (formerly of Ontario Power Generation). He is active on many IEEE and IEC working groups developing standards and guides, and is a Fellow of the IEEE.

Drallim Telecom appoints new distributor in Malaysia

In December 2008 Drallim Industries made the acquisition of Automotive Cable Products and began manufacturing Mechanical Cables and Control Rods from their factory in East Sussex. Supplying the automotive, plant, marine and aero ground equipment industries the business has continued to grow and can report a successful first year. Always looking for new areas to further develop the business the plan for 2010 is to manufacture Control Cables for the aircraft industry.

This years Manufacturer Awards were presented at The Tower Hotel in London on 12th November.  Hosted by iconic racing legend, Sir Jackie Stewart and held in association with RBS, the event was attended by companies across all sectors of industry and highlighted the diversity and strength of UK manufacturing. The judging panel was made up of high profile individuals from trade, industry and academic backgrounds.

Our approach has been successful. We have moved the company from a loss making position with steady improvement over 4 years. Our financial year 07/08 ended with record sales growth of 30% and profits more than doubled. For the period 08/09 sales increased again by 15.5% and profits were maintained despite the deep recession. We were also able to increase our headcount by 12 to 65 and raise our investment activities in preparation for the next period of growth.

We have continued to use local support groups to help us improve our performance and have struck an especially close relationship with the University of Brighton.
 
Our strong commitment to a Continuous Improvement policy has embedded our “no blame” culture enabling us to become very agile in response to these changing times. This was especially evident during our recent acquisition of ACP where excellent teamwork was achieved as we faced the challenge of moving the whole company from South Wales to St Leonards on Sea; we set up production in record time.  We have come out of the learning curve with good skills in cable technology and we have already begun to win new customers and to grow the business.

40 Years Service to Drallim and Cargo Aids.

Richard Bradford recently achieved the remarkable feat of 40 years continuous service with Drallim. Richard joined the company in October 1969 and has worked mainly for the Cargo Aids division. Richard is only the second person to have achieved this length of service at Drallim although there are many that have completed in excess of 25 years. So Drallim must be doing something right!

Having entered 5 categories earlier this year, it was recently announced that Drallim have once again been successful in their entry. We have been shortlisted as potential winners of 4 Awards; The "SME Manufacturer of the Year", "Leadership & Strategy", "People Skills & Productivity" and "IT in Manufacturing" categories.

Above average scores for their Health & Safety (75.3%) Environment (83.7%) and Quality (93.6%) Management Systems were awarded during a two-day company and site visit resulting in the issue of the UVDB Verify Certificate of Assessment

The UVDB verify scheme enables the major players within the Utilities environment to access all the Drallim Industries Ltd pre-qualification documentation, reports and results by computer, thus eliminating the lengthy pre-qualification period before any tender process can begin.

Telecoms recently received an order for 24 Waveguide Dehydrators from Jamaica’s national telecom provider ‘LIME’ (Cable and Wireless). Types ordered were the Drallim model 12437/L5, the 12255 and the 12269. The final consignment was shipped to Kingston middle of November.

Another welcome export order was received from Radio Frequency Services (Germany). RFS is a major global player in the Broadcast sector and Drallim is extremely pleased to be the selected supplier for their prestigious projects. Drallim Telecom understands this initial order is destined for the EU where further opportunities are reported to exist.

The ‘AIRMON’ BT cable monitoring contract is proceeding well, with customer acceptance  - recognised as ‘business as usual’ - awarded in July. As it stands to-date, 37,000 transducers, and more than 700 control units have been delivered. The present contract is expected to run for at least the next three years, with further add-ons anticipated beyond this point. Having achieved this national milestone, Telecom is now aiming AIRMON as an upgrade to its existing global telecommunication customers.

Delegates for the conference, 119 in total, came from 21 countries worldwide; from as far afield as Japan and New Zealand. Twenty one of these delegates were academics from universities

Sponsored by Orange, the awards are made up of nine categories, Drallim are among more than 60 organisations to reach the final stage, and have already made their presentation in person before an independent, expert judging panel. So it’s now out of our hands, and we have to wait along with the other organizations for the Winners to be unveiled at a glittering gala dinner and awards ceremony in London at the Hilton Park Lane hotel 14th July.

In the Regional program Drallim Industries were entered into two of the nine categories: ‘The Health, Work & well-being Award for Small Business - FINALISTS

‘The Small to Medium Sized Business Award ”

The Drallim entry for this category missed out on a finals place by just 2 points, they were however singled out by the judges for special praise, and awarded the coveted “Highly commended status” for which they will attend a presentation in July, also at the London Hilton.

Automotive Cable Products acquired by Drallim Industries Limited

Drallim are delighted to announce that the business of Automotive Cable Products has been transferred to Drallim Industries Limited where it will operate as an integral part of the Controls Division.

The Automotive Cable Products business is a well-established specialist manufacturer of mechanical control cables. Currently based in Llanelli, South Wales, the business will be relocated to Drallim’s headquarters in East Sussex.

With the transfer and setup of a comprehensive manufacturing and design capability, we can offer 1 off custom cables to batch manufacture covering a wide sector of industries which include marine, automotive, rail, plant and transport.

The awards recognise world class achievement in British manufacturing and this particular award goes to the manufacturing company that, in the opinion of the judges, best demonstrated the value of inspirational leadership and a properly constituted and communicated corporate strategy. The judges felt that the managing director of the winning company demonstrated exceptional and inspirational leadership that resulted in a dramatic turnaround, converting a significant trading loss into a substantial profit in less than four years. A well documented and clearly communicated company strategy provided a solid framework for the transformation which included a ‘no blame’ culture to promote continuous improvement at all levels, the implementation of lean manufacturing, company wide training and the search for new technologies and techniques.

In March 2008 a seminar was held in Liverpool promoting the Iris range of monitoring equipment. More than 40 engineers from different power stations attended the one-day seminar, leading to several new sales as a direct result.
